George Alagiah is a presenter of the BBC 6 o’clock news and a BBC foreign correspondent. He is recognised throughout the industry for his reporting of significant events in Africa and the Developing World.
His book “Home from Home” was published last year and in it he charts his transformation from ‘Immigrant boy to Englishman’. It is a poignant journey that opens a window on a child’s struggle with his own cultural identity and the rigours of assimilation into a different world. But Alagiah finds that the “sink or swim” atmosphere of his Portsmouth boarding school is a world away from what he discovers is the “separate development” of so many immigrant children today.
This is an intensely personal book which tackles head-on some of the great challenges of multicultural Britain. Home from Home is much more than an autobiography; it is a must-read for anyone who cares about race relations in Britain today.
To complement this event, and as George Alagiah is Patron of The Fair Trade Association, there will be a presentation and sale of Fair Trade goods in the Ludlow Assembly Rooms.
he was very good but the room and sound in particular was very amateurish
